I am a Research Professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), a Professor of Political Science, and a Guest Researcher at ESOP at the Department of Economics at the University of Oslo. Previously I have worked at the Norwegian University of Science & Technology (NTNU) and Michigan State University.
My current research interests include: governance, bureaucracies and organizations, conflict dynamics, and the development consequences of warfare.
I have published 32 peer-reviewed academic articles and a dozen books, including a forthcoming book coauthored with Kaare Strøm and published by Cambridge University Press, Fragile Bargains: Power Sharing in Africa.
I am Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Peace Research and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Area Studies Review.
John Brehm and I are the 2014 co-recipient of the Herbert Simon Award for research on bureaucratic politics. I am a member of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (DNVA) and The Royal Norwegian Society of Science and Letters (DKNVS).
